International Youth Day Rally
As the world gets ready to celebrate International Youth Day on Sunday 12th August, 2012, the Banking, Insurance and General Workers Union through its Youth Committee will be staging a walk around the Queen’s Park Savannah and Rally on that day.
The Savannah walk will start from Jerningham Avenue at 2.30pm and proceed to the Communications Workers Union Hall on Henry Street, PoS, where the Rally will be held. There will be Cultural Presentations, Guest Youth Speakers, Guest Appearances from Soca Artistes and a Live DJ (Big Truck).
The theme for this year’s event is: “BUILDING A BETTER T&T: BIGWU YOUTH PARTNERING WITH YOU”. This theme is against the background where income inequality is worsening in Trinidad and Tobago. The richest 10% of the population own 30% of the wealth of the country, while the poorest 10% of the population owns less than 3% of the wealth. To make matters worse, youth unemployment is between 18-20% of the labour force according to Minister Fazal Karim as he publicly stated on 2nd May 2012. This means that tens of thousands of our youth are unemployed let alone the thousands more who are underemployed and those who work for no more than the minimum wage.
To compound this grave injustice, the Government is proceeding, through divestment to take the wealth of our profitable bank and put it in the hands of the already rich rather than using this wealth to invest in creating decent work for our youth.
On the occasion of International Youth Day, we take this opportunity to call on all youths to join with us to build a better Trinidad & Tobago.
