International Women’s Day: zero tolerance on sexual harassment
International Women’s Day today is held on March 8th each year to observe and to reflect on those issues that women, in all walks of society, encounter and fight against, every day. Inequality, discrimination and violence are just some, but from all three stems sexual harassment.
Verónica Fernández Méndez, Head of UNI Equal Opportunities said, “Experiencing sexual harassment is one of the most difficult situations that a person can face in and out of the workplace. It generates fear, emotional and psychological distress and creates hostile environments. And that’s why addressing sexual harassment is central to our work and why it is the focus of the new materials we are launching today to coincide with International Women’s Day.”
In 2016, and as part of the broader UNI Breaking the Circle! Campaign against violence, the UNI Equal Opportunities department launched “NO EXCUSES”, a campaign which aims to lay down the basic notions of sexual harassment so our affiliated unions can prevent and address sexual harassment in the workplace and help eradicate it.
For International Women’s Day, UNI Equal Opportunities is launching a new set of materials that include, amongst other tools, a Manual for “Training Trainers” on sexual harassment.
In the manual you can find what sexual harassment is, where it can happen, who is a perpetrator and who is a victim and what myths and stereotypes surround it. We also provide tools to create policies aimed at preventing this kind of situations; as well as complaint procedures that will help guide our affiliated unions in the face of harassment situations.
You can find all our material online at:

Information and education are resources that empower us. They allow us to combat inequality which generates violence, and sexual harassment is one of the many faces of violence; so help us spread the word, because wherever sexual harassment occurs, it must be stopped.
Zero tolerance: no excuses!
