India’s department of industrial policy and promotion (Dipp) is working on ways to monitor the investments of overseas private equity firms, reports The Economic Times (India). This follows advice from The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the capital market regulator, on the need to check unsound practices like asset stripping. A beginning is likely to be made by tracking the duration of investment and entry as well as exit patterns. “We are examining various modalities for tracking PE deals. But we will not resort to any regulatory measure which could send wrong signals to foreign investors,” a Dipp official reportedly said. The Economic Times quotes Datasource as estimating that total Indian PE deals announced in 2007 amounted to $19.03 billion, of which Temasek accounted for $2.5 billion. Temasek is a holding company owned by the government of Singapore.
