Article in Sweden’s Aftonbladet newspaper criticizes IKEA over its union-busting activities in the United States

UNI Global Union’s Head of Commerce, Alke Boessiger said the commentary in the Aftonbladet was right to draw attention to the union-busting tactics of IKEA USA in Stoughton Massachusetts.

“IKEA USA has chosen to ignore IKEA’s global commitment to freedom of association and decent work. In Stoughton they have actively sought to mislead the workers as to the effects of joining a union while keeping the UFCW union out and actively preventing freedom of speech. IKEA USA has gone against the core values of IKEA Global. The UNI Global Union IKEA Alliance demands that IKEA Global steps in and ensures IKEA USA stops its anti-union activities now. IKEA Global, you can fix it.”

“The article in the Aftonbladet is correct to point out that because IKEA uses the Swedish colours and brands itself as the purveyor of the Swedish model of decency, it has a special responsibility, ”  Boessiger added.

Earlier this week the Swedish Trade Union Confederation, LO, adopted a statement condemning IKEA’s anti-union activities at Stoughton and demanded that IKEA Global intervene.
