The Council of Global Unions, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC)and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), wrote to President Gül concerning the new “Trade Unions and Collective Labour Relations Bill” which passed the Turkey’s Parliament last week and is now waiting Presidential approval.



Philip Jennings, UNI Global Union General Secretary, said, “The new legislation is counterproductive and not good enough. It violates fundamental workers’ rights, including the right to organize and the right of collective bargaining enshrined in the basic ILO Standards: Conventions 87 and 98 to which Turkey is a signatory. Turkey has to do better on labour rights. That is the message coming from the global unions, the ILO and the European Commission. We have written to President Gül and respectfully demand that Turkey meets international labour norms. The workers of Turkey deserve no less.”
