PSI and FES hosted a Global Labour Tax Summit in Geneva last week attended by Global Union leaders, national unions, academic experts, civil society organisations and other allies working on tax justice. Global tax rules are currently being discussed in the UN, OECD, G20 and sustainable development forums, and there is widespread agreement that the global tax rules don’t work. Workers are being asked to pay more tax and receive less while multinationals and the richest in the world often avoid paying tax altogether. A new report was also published by the ITF, PSI and the Tax Justice Network- Australia showing that Chevron was one of the most profitable oil company in the world but also a major tax evader. These participants who attended the Summit came up with a list of key priorities for joint actions and campaigning. One set of actions which is particularly relevant to UNI relates to multinational companies and links up to the Resolution that was adopted in Cape Town. Multinational companies should be obliged to publicly disclose the use of tax heavens in their financial reporting. A uniform tax system should also be adopted across the various branches and offices from a single multinational company. Finally governments need to play their part by strengthening tax enforcement, agree on a minimum tax rate and expand financial transaction taxes.
