UNI Europa Telecom and UNI Europa IBITS agreed last week in Dublin to merge the two sectors and to create UNI Information and Communications Technology, at the European level.



Two years ago, UNI and its affiliates acknowledged the convergence in the work being done and in the issues being faced by the unions in these sectors, and decided to consider a merger. Many months of discussions led to a relatively harmonious fusion of the two this week at the inaugural UNI Europa ICTS conference in Ireland.



Elections held on Friday 11 September confirmed that the president of UNI Europa ICTS will be Tove Johansen , supported by Franca Salis Madinier, Peter Skyte and Michael Jäkel as Vice Presidents.



UNI ICTS looks forward to re-energising its organising efforts, strengthening its 1.2 million membership and building power for information and communications workers.



During the meeting, UNI ICTS affiliates agreed to send letters to the CEOs of France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom calling on the companies to ensure that workers' rights are respected in the merger process for their mobile operations in the UK. Affiliates will also write to Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann, demanding that the company sign a global agreement with UNI and guarantee basic trade union rights for workers throughout its operations worldwide, particularly in the United States.
