The Ghana government and mobile giants, Vodafone Thursday announced a deal under which the UK-based company will buy 70 per cent of its sh a res in state-owned Ghana Telecom (GT).



On August 28 the Ghana Trades Union (GTUC) called on government to withdraw the agreement on the proposed sale of 70 per cent of the state-owned Ghana Telecom (GT) to Vodafone International Holdings. The deal was announced earlier this month.



The GTUC called on government to subject the proposed agreement to broad public debate and consultations on available options.The statement of Ghana TUC expressed concern about the sale of GT shares, not only because of it implied potential job losses but also GT being a strategic national asset.



The GTUC stated that multinational companies, like Vodafone, came in for profit and did not fulfill social obligations. It asked the Government to explore other options which would ensure that GT remained viable not only economically but at the same time be able to provide communication services to the people of Ghana.
