GENDER SENSITISATION ENABLES WINNING IN WORKPLACE

![]() In UNI asia pacific we maintain gender equality we have reached 33% but we are aiming at 40% to 40% by 2014; said Magdalene Kong at the opening of the panel discussion on "Winning at the Workplace through Gender Equality". She said that both men and women both needs empowerment and all must act together to achieve equality in the family, workplace and society. A panel discusion was organized by the Women's committee of UNI Sri Lanka Affiliates Council for participants of the South Asian sub-regional Empowerment Course held in Colombo from 21-25 September 2011. ![]() Lankika Ariyasinghe, Secretary of the women's committe moderated the discussion higlighting the achievements of women in Sri Lanka. She said Sir Lanka ranks 16 the position out of 130 as reported in the Gender Gap report 2010. Female percentage is high in all universities in Sri Lanka and they are doing very well in education and securing higher education. But when it comes to the job market there are discriminations towards women. Chamithri Ariyasinghe contributed her experiences from the banking industry; she said that the public sector banks encourage and recruit more women compared to the private sector banks. Many women are constrained to take higher responsibilities owing to family responsibilities and their performances are rated low resluting in poor compensations. Lakmali Hathurusinghe representing Sri Lanka Telecom shared her experiences and challanges of female employees inTelecom industry. Chandrika Eladaththa from the Postal industry is Sri Lanka said that men and women have to work togehter to protect and promote the postal services in Sri Lanka. Alina Rai. representing NUGDS India shared the expereinces and challanges faced by women in general in India. Tanzeela Butt from Pakistan said that trade unions have to work hard to promote gender equality in Pakistan, and she is determined to work towards this goal. Ishwari Kathayat and Kalawathi Awasthi from Nepal contribted to the lively discussion from their experiences respectively from banking and telecom industries. A lively discussion ended with an interactive session concluding that trade unions need to take the lead to increase awareness about equal opportunites for men and women and work together to secure decent work and winning in the workplace |
