UNI Europa Graphical & Packaging, UNITE and the University of Strathclyde recently held a memorial service to celebrate the life of the late Prof John Gennard at the Scottish Trade Union Centre in Glasgow.



Over 60 of his former colleagues from the labour and academic field joined with his family in paying tribute to the life and the work of John.



He was a great supporter of the international work of UNI Graphical & Packaging and the previous IGF/EGF and his research papers on all aspects of the graphical industry have helped shape the current work of unions throughout Europe and further afield.



John was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the Annual Collective Bargaining Conference and his emphasis of ensuring there was accurate data collected and strategies developed was instrumental in workers in the graphical industry achieving good collective bargaining outcomes.



Many of his close working colleagues from the University and the Union including Tony Dubbins (former General Secretary GPMU) and Geoff Hayward (former National Officer GPMU) spoke of John’s great commitment, not only to the labour movement generally but the graphical industry in particular.



It was announced during the memorial service that an annual Professor John Gennard Essay would be established.
