The first joint declaration in the history of the European insurance sector social dialogue was signed Tuesday on a meeting between the four social partners in Brussels.

The joint declaration addresses "the demographic challenge in the insurance sector in Europe" and focus on three key issues: Life Long Learning, Work-Life Balance and Health and safety at work. Dealing with these issues is essential to ensure a longer and better working life for the people working in the sector and thus keep and attract qualified labour to the sector.

The joint declaration has been under way since mid 2008 and is a strong signal that the insurance dialogue, which has been on hold for many years is now really on the track.

The meeting also approved the workplan for 2010 in which the priority is measures to follow up on the joint declaration. The first element in this is developing a booklet on best practices on dealing with the demographic challenge from social partners at national and company level to provide inspiration and good bench marks for social partners and companies across Europe.
