UNI's US affiliates report that with the American economy facing its biggest crisis since the start of the Great Depression in 1929, mail volumes are down dramatically in most areas of the country. When mail volume is down, USPS revenue is down, and as a result the Postal Service is claiming that it lost approximately three billions dollars in the fiscal year that just ended on September 30, 2008. US postal unions have been having discussions with USPS management about how to handle the situation, but advise that the general state of the American economy will be the key factor in determining the Postal Service’s future.
