The international trade union delegation was detained as it arrived at Nadi Airport on Wednesday and all members of the delegation were deported.



“We are outraged by this latest act of disrespect for labour rights,” said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings. “Denying entry to an international trade union delegation is just the latest in a string of human and worker’s rights abuses perpetrated by the Bainimarama regime.”



Attar Singh, General Secretary of the Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions (FICTU), said the refusal to allow the Australian Congress of Trade Unions(ACTU) and New Zealand Congress of Trade Unions(NZCTU) delegation entry “makes an unambiguous and clear statement that [the regime] has no desire to discuss or resolve the current issues on trade union and human rights violations.”



The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) also condemned the deportation of the union delegation.



“The Fiji regime has maintained that it is open to outside scrutiny, but this denial of entry tells the opposite story. Try as the military authorities might, the spotlight will continue to shine on their violations of workers’ rights and other basic freedoms. Todays’ events will only increase pressure on the regime,” said ITCU General Secretary Sharan Burrow.
