The US-based express company FedEx has placed a $4.8 billion bid to buy the Dutch parcel company TNT. The planned merger is seen as FedEx's attempt to grow it's European-based operations in a new effort to compete with DHL, UPS and DPD-GeoPost in the European market as e-commerce brings a massive boom to the parcel and express markets there. The news comes two years after European regulators blocked UPS's attempts to buy TNT, fearing a decrease in competition in the market.

The FedEx-TNT merger will have masssive ramifications on the European parcel and logistics market. UNI Global Union will continue to work with its affiliates and with our sister unions in the International Transport Workers Federation to ensure that workers in TNT and FedEx don't pay the price for the merger. UNI and ITF work actively with unions in the sector via our Global Delivery Network. 

UNI Head of Post and Logistics Stephen DeMatteo said of the merger, "We're following the developments of the announced merger closely. Together with our affiliates and our partners, we'll ensure that FedEx doesn't export its notorious anti-union culture into its growing European operations."
