On 1 July 2013, prices for roaming in the European Union dropped significantly, including in Croatia, the newest member of the EU. The price for making a call is now capped at EUR 0.24, EUR 0.07 for receiving a call, EUR 0.08 per SMS, and EUR 0.45 per MB of data. This represents at least a 17% price drop for calling and at least a 36% decrease for data. Operators are free to offer cheaper rates, and many have introduced special packages for travelling customers.



The European Commission has been working to reduce the price of roaming in the union since 2007. The current plan was first outlined in 2011 and subsequently approved both by lawmakers and the European Parliament.



“The latest price cuts put more money in your pocket for summer, and are a critical step towards getting rid of these premiums once and for all”, said the Vice-President of the Commission, Neelie Kroes. She continued: “This is good for both consumers and companies, because it takes fear out of the market, and it grows the market.”



On 1 July 2014, the Commission will introduce further price restrictions, reducing the cost of data to EUR 0.20 per MB, of making a call to EUR 0.19, of receiving a call to EUR 0.05, and of sending a text message to EUR 0.06.
