Educating Our Children: JPGU (Kanto Branch) Scholarship

12 Sri Lankans students will find pursuing a university degree more affordable as they receive the sixth Scholarship Scheme for Children of Postal Employees in Sri Lanka at the Symposium of Work Life Management held on 7 August 2012 at Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The UNI Apro/ JPGU Scholarship Scheme is financially assisted by Japanese Postal Group Union (JPGU) Kanto Branch and is opened to children of affiliates from the Union of Post and Telecommunication Officers (UPTO) and National Post and Telecommunication Workers Union (NPTWU).
Students have to go through an intense session of IQ tests, written tests and interviews and the selection process also considers the applicant's family income, family size, disability and participation in extra curriculum activities. Applicants with low family income and high family density are more likely to be selected. Recipients will receive an allowance of 2,500 LKR (USD20) every month.
“This scholarship will be a real gift for me and my family. As a university student, I have many expenses. With this scholarship, I am confident that there will be no financial disturbances for me in the coming years,” said Hirantha Sankalpa Jayawardena, a recipient of the scholarship and undergraduate in University of Moratuwa.
“[I would like to] thank Japanese Postal Union for coming forward to help the needy children in Sri Lanka by providing financial support. It is very impressive, the way they have come forward and showing their generosity to the people in our country, in spite of the hardships faced by Japan recently,” remarked R. Abinayan, a scholar whose ambition is to be an engineer so that he can help the poor and bring society together.
“As a Sri Lankan, I am thankful for our Japanese colleagues for arranging the scholarship scheme despite difficult economic conditions in Japan. I am appealing to all the students who will receive the scholarship to make full use of the grant to reach highest scholastic achievements. This is how we can show our appreciation in true spirit of international solidarity,” said Jayasri Priyalal, Chairman of UNI Apro/JPGU Scholarship Scheme in Sri Lanka and Director UNI Apro Finance, Professional & Managers Sector Activities.
