The labor movement in the Americas was the sector most deeply affected by the dictatorships that devastated the continent until the ‘90s, and it has also been a key factor in their downfall. The lists of hundreds of thousands of people disappeared and murdered because of their strug-gle include a tragically large number of union leaders and activists. The neoliberal policies that were imposed by fire and sword during the nineties were built upon the destruction of union and social organizations with any capacity to confront and oppose such policies. For all these reasons, we do not hesitate at the time of defending democracy in the face of any attempts at destabilization and repeat our motto: NEVER AGAIN. What has happened in Honduras in 2009 may not be replicated under any circumstances.





Increased violence must never be an excuse to curtail freedoms and refuse to acknowledge popular sovereignty. The solutions to underlying problems require a stronger democracy, and demand inclusion rather than exclusion. The attempted removal of a democratically elected Pres-ident runs counter to everything that we have been able to build in re-cent years. UNI Americas makes a call to be on guard and support the preservation of the democratic system in Paraguay.
