Paraguay`s newly elected President Horacio Cartes takes office with promises to create new jobs and rebuild the economy. In this spirit UNI has written to the new President and asked him to request that the Minister of Labour take up the case that was left outstanding last year when 327 workers were fired for taking strike action by the Spanish multinational Prosegur. They were sacked after returning to work on the back of a commitment to arbitration by the government . The arbitration did not take place and the workers have not been reinstated.



UNI Global Union General Secretary, Phillip Jennings has asked the President to sit down with UNI and the unions and find a solution to the dispute and also to show that the government is committed to supporting the weak.



`This is a time for Justice ` Jennings said.



`This would be a welcome step forward for a great number of families.`



Paraguay`s previous leader, President Lugo, was suspended from power during a constitutional crisis triggered by the opposition party of which President Cartes is the leader.
