UNI’s affiliate in the UK, the CWU says that there has been huge support right across the country from the public, politicians and trade unions in the UK and beyond for postal workers striking in the Royal Mail this week.

Furthermore, a poll done for BBC Newsnight on Thursday 22^nd October showed that twice as many people sympathise with postal workers rather than the Royal Mail management in the postal dispute.

Half of those surveyed (50%) sympathised with the postal workers and the unions as opposed to the Royal Mail management (25%) according to an opinion poll carried out by ComRes for BBC Two's Newsnight. Full data tables available at www.comres.co.uk.

Around 120 000 postal workers went on strike at the end of last week to condemn the modernisation process undertaken by Royal Mail that affects them through threats to job security, unreasonable demands by management in terms of work targets as well as cuts in pay.

Yesterday, (Monday 26 October), talks resumed between the CWU leaders and Royal Mail with the mediation of Brendan Barber of the TUC. The talks will continue today. Neither side have commented on these talks.

Postal workers will further strike from Thursday for three days if the dispute cannot be resolved though these talks.
