FENTECT, the Brazilian postal workers union, supports proposals by the Brazilian government to strengthen universal access to postal services by expanding into rural areas. However, the union argues that this expansion requires an additional 20,000 workers. To date, the government has not been listening to the workers.



The Brazilian postal service is introducing delivery targets requiring 95% of letters to be delivered within five working days. The new regulations will also require the postal service to have a post office in every Brazilian municipality by the end of 2012. This means post offices will be opened in 46 municipalities. Furthermore, postal services will be extended into all 4,261 of the districts within Brazil that each have a population under 500. Currently only 2,744 of these locations (64%) are served. The postal service will have until 2015 to meet these standards.
