The states are Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. In the main cities, around 70% of the workers have joined the strike. These workers are employed in several different sectors, such as shops and banks, and in many cities these services have been closed down.



The strike started after the employers shown no willingness to discuss improvements of working conditions. Security workers are without wage increases and the Minimum Wage for Security is often not adhered to. For that reason, the main strike's objective is to secure 10% increase.



In addition, the workers seek to achieve more rights, such as health insurance and an additional allowance of 30% of their salaries as compensation for risks associated with this dangerous work. The current value for this compensation is only around 8% of the salary.



The unions point out that, for example, a security guard that will be hired for the Olympics games and the Football World Cup will receive the half of the category minimum wage established by law.
