For R.R. Donnelley’s management at the Santa Rita plant in Brazil, exercising union freedoms constitutes a “serious offense.” Sergio Ricardo de Almeida, union leader and plant operator, was suspended for five days for the “crime” of talking to the workers. The company alleges that Sergio caused intentional damage to its assets. The truth is different: the company attempted to prevent employees from attending an Extraordinary Assembly in the framework of campaign on salary that had been decided on by the workers´ vote and communicated ahead of time to the plant supervisors. The penalization of Sergio only seeks to instill fear among the workers.



R.R. Donnelley is the largest print company in the world, with plants in Europe, the United States, Canada, Latin America and Asia (China and India among others). This last year, the company was penalized in the United States for interfering with the right to organize in one of its plants. All efforts by UNI to establish a global dialogue with the company have been unsuccessful; the company never responded to any of our requests.
