Rising unemployment, labour rights violations, mass contractualization, price rise particularly of essential commodities, inadequate social security, Privatization of Essential Public Services were the common issued that rallied the 11 trade union centers and other unions together despite ideological difference to mobilize their members for the strike.



Milind Nadkarni, President of National Confederation of Bank Employees[NCBE] in India said that members in the banking and insurance industry unions in Public sector joined the strike. It is reported that over a million trade union members took part in the strike protesting against the issues raised in the common charter of demands.



"The West Bengal government’s repressive orders failed to deter the trade unions in the joining the strike" says Thomas John General Secretary of UNI Indian Liaison Council. He reports that; Strike enabled the Indian working class to convey the seriousness of the issues as confronted by them.



The strike has been most effective in states of Assam, Bihar, Haryana, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Tripura and West Bengal.
