The BBC has reported on the lack of training and preparation for Security Guards recruited for duties during the World Cup in Brazil, due to start in a few weeks time. 25,000 guards are required to cover the 12 Football Stadiums but less than 7,000 have received the training required. The companies are due to take over security at the stadiums from 21st May.

The companies are saying that they cannot release the guards for the 5 days required training and that if they are unable to deal with any situations they will be able to call on the state security and Police services, FIFA however are insisting that all duties must be covered by the private security companies.

Most of the guards remain outside organised unions and without proper training, equipment and support there is an increased risk to the public should events go wrong. A number of public protests against Government spending on the World Cup are also planned and this may prove to be precisely the kind of situation that these private companies will be unable to handle.
