Early childhood educators have had a big November, taking action in cities all over Australia in support of pay increases to reflect the important and professional work they do. These actions are a part of the Big Steps campaign, run by educator members of United Voice, the union for the ECEC sector in Australia. 

United Voice has been campaigning for respect and professional wages for the ECEC workforce so that Australia's children can access the level of education and care they need and deserve. The union has also lodged an application with the Fair Work Commission for an Equal Remuneration Order to bring early childhood educators' wages into line with those of teachers and similarly qualified male workers. 

The Big Steps month of action began on November 9 when educators in Canberra gathered in a flash mob protest inside Parliament House. About 30 representatives of childcare centres around Canberra assembled in the foyer of Parliament House wearing the traditionally male attire of suits and ties. They were followed by actions in New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Victoria.
