For the past three years, UNI Post & Logistics affiliate the American Postal Workers Union has campaigned to bring a stop to a program which outsourced their members' work from the United States Postal Service into the office supply giant Staples. As the new year began, the APWU announced to members that they had won the campaign and that the Post Office would end the program with Staples in February.

The union sprung into action as soon as the Postal Service announced the arrangment in early 2014. The "Approved Shipper" program, as it was called, moved APWU work in USPS post offices into the non-union, low-wage office supply stores around the country. The union's campaign lead off with a massive mobilization of members in a national day of action in April 2014 which saw APWU and other union activists protesting at more than 50 Staples outlets. The union went on to challenge a proposed merger between Staples and Office Depot, which was eventually scuttled by regulators and organized for a nation-wide boycott of Staples supported by the AFL-CIO. 

Just last October, UNI Post & Logistics affiliates sent a strong message to Staples and to the Postmaster General when the UNI P&L World Conference adopted a statement in support of the boycott and union's position. 

"If Staples was going to take our work and jobs for their private profit, we were going to hit back and affect their bottom line,” APWU President Mark Dimondstein said in statement. "The U.S. Mail is not for sale!"
