Amcor Ltd. is closing its Baie d'Urfé, Quebec, Canada, manufacturing plant on May 31, resulting in 60 layoffs, reports The Montreal Gazette. The factory makes specialty carton packaging for the pharmaceutical and personal care markets.

The facility was acquired when Amcor, based in Melbourne, Australia, purchased part of Alcan Packaging from Rio Tinto in a deal that closed on Feb. 1.

"We have been trying for the past several months to find solutions to rejuvenate this business but were not successful," Serge Caron of Amcor Specialty Packaging said in a news release.

In a telephone interview, Caron said it is not clear if any of the employees will have the possibility of employment at any other Amcor entities in the province.
