Workers at Amazon.com in Germany are taking strike action today over the global internet retailer's failure to implement a collective agreement in line with similar agreements at other retail and mail order companies.



Ver.di says its members at Amazon's logistic centre in Leipzig are taking action today because the company has failed to deliver on fair pay and benefits. This is the second one day strike in recent weeks.



On 14 May 600 workers in its Bad Hersfeld facilities and 300 in Leipzig also took strike action over the same concerns, including demands for fairer basic pay and supplements for night shifts.



Amazon has 9000 workers in Germany.



The Head of UNI Commerce, Alke Boessiger said, "Amazon.com has a worldwide reputation for delivering on time. Unfortunately when it comes to workers' rights in Germany it is way behind. UNI stands with our affiliate German union Ver.di in urging the company to come to the negotiating table in good faith. Amazon.com's name is built on the quality of the service given by its workers. They deserve a decent salary and benefits in line with industry norms."
