This document is an abbreviated, English-language version of the Dutch survey report entitled A world to win –

Professionalization of the employment relationships for professional athletes in the Netherlands, which was commissioned by the Dutch Employers’ Association for the Sports Industry (Werkgeversorganisatie in de Sport or WOS) in collaboration with NL Sporter, an organisation that represents the interests of Dutch athletes. The survey was funded by the Dutch Ministry of Health,

Welfare and Sports.



The report was based on the following survey questions:

1. What are the current employment relationships for professional athletes in the Netherlands?

2. What are the current bottlenecks, risks and deficiencies in this area and what solution paths are feasible?

3. How are the employment relationships in related sectors structured and what conclusions can be drawn from this?

4. How are the employment relationships for top athletes structured in other countries in the world and what conclusions can be drawn from this?

5. What strategy and concrete recommendations can be put forward in order to improve and strengthen the employment relationships for professional athletes in the Netherlands?
