A strong vote for unionisation: congratulations to DiGi employees in Malaysia! Boleh!
After a secret vote for union recognition, more than 90% of DiGi employees voting across the Malay Peninsula have voted in favour of recognising the DiGi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd. Employees Union.
The ballot was conducted under the supervision of the Ministry of Human Resources which means that negotiations will now open for a first collective agreement.
This resounding vote of confidence in the union follows an intensive “get out the vote” campaign led by the DiGi Employees Union and UNI’s coordinating body, the UNI-MLC. DiGi is a subsidy of the Norwegian company Telenor with which UNI Global Union has a global framework agreement. UNI’s Norwegian affiliates, instrumental in achieving the global agreement, have undertaken missions to Malaysia and are impressed by the ballot result.
UNI Global Union General Secretary, Philip Jennings paid tribute to the DiGi Employees Union leaders led by President Carina Wong Lai Ming, Vice President Ismail bin Jonid, General Secretary Muhamed Ghazali in Ahmad and UNI MLC President Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal for their strong leadership, determination and strategic planning throughout the campaign. Jennings welcomed the “hands-on” presence of UNI Apro through, ICTS Director Kun Wardana Abyoto and Organizing and Campaigns Director Satoshi Tamai, and UNI Global Union’s Senior Organiser, Joanna Katsoulas who provided important “know-how” in the frantic days running up to the vote.
Christopher NG the UNI Apro Regional Secretary congratulated the DiGi Employees' Union on the significant victory. He urged the DiGi Management to respect the employees' decision by accepting the DiGi Employees' Union and welcome the Union as partner to grow DiGi for the benefit of customers, employees and shareholders."
UNI Global Union General Secretary, Philip Jennings said, “Bravo to the DiGi union! This is a break through and we acknowledge the contribution of all the UNI family, including our Norwegian affiliates because this is a game-changer. Now begins the next phase of intensive work. We will all continue to support the union as it moves towards negotiating its first collective bargaining agreement: which will form the bedrock of labour relations into the future.”
President of the DiGi Employees Union, Carina Wong Lai added, “Thanks to all DiGizens who contributed and supported in every individual way. We couldn’t have made it without you!!”
