A clear message from the Swiss Public: Stop the liberalisation of Post



The message from the Swiss public is clear: Parliament should renounce the full liberalization of the postal market. On 17 and May 18, members of the relevant committee of the Swiss Parliament will take into account the hugely successful initiative of the Union of Communication, where they have gathered 120,000 signatures in five months. It must declare an immediate moratorium on the closure of post offices and other restructuring.



The ball is now in the hands of Parliament. Armed with massive popular support, the Union of Communications has asked the Committee on Transport and Telecommunications Council (CTT-N) to remove the Bill for the full liberalization of the post. Alain Carrupt, president of the SYNDICOM, could not be clearer: "Should Parliament, go against the clear opinion of the majority of the population, against the total liberalization of the postal market, we would take the right to have a referendum without hesitation, and with great confidence in the outcome."



Rolf Zimmermann, first secretary of the ASU, insists: "The residual monopoly should be maintained with the current limit of 50 grams. The financial security of the universal service can not do without this. "But this universal postal service is just another goal of the initiative. This is to ensure the quality and availability throughout the territory, including through the maintenance of an extensive network of post offices. "The Socialist Party and the unions agree that a majority of the population has access to public services of high level," added the president of PS Christian Levrat. While the right to undertake a privileged few, for very large customers of the Post Office for banking and insurance, we defend the interests of consumers, employees, outlying areas. "



The Swiss Post which has already taken some of their own initiatives to dismantle the network is severely criticised by the Union. "Now the process undertaken for years by the Swiss Post to dismantle it’s own network, is denounced by Alain Carrupt. This is a major economic mistake. Because the postal network is an asset to the company, an advantage that no other actor can ever challenge. The Post has to grow this advantage even more, rather than weaken it continually. "



The Union of Communication therefore requires that the Post delivers an immediate moratorium on the closure of post offices and on any new restructuring plan. The people must first decide on the initiative.
