25/11/2008 - Int. Day for the elimination of violence against women

Combating violence against women has been high up on UNI’s agenda ever since its creation. Therefore, we continue and will continue to work on the “Stop Violence” Campaign until violence against women is eradicated
*************
A number of UNI affiliates and UNI women’s networks have planned activities between 25 November and 10 December (International Human Rights Day). We would like to share information on actions that have been carried out during the 15 days of activism. Please let us know about them by emailing to women@uniglobalunion.org. As in previous years, reports and pictures about activities organized to mark November 25th will be put on the UNI website.Violence may manifest itself in various forms in different cultures. The World Health Organization has offered the following definition of violence:
“The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation.”
Violent actions violate the rights ensured by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For example:
· the right to life, liberty and security of person;
· the right not to be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment;
· the right to equal protection of the law;
· the right to the protection of the law against attacks upon his honor and reputation;
· the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; and
· the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
The Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women provides a definition of this type of violence:
“Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.”
DENOUNCING IT IS EVERYBODY’S RESPONSIBILITY
