2009 - a Year of Organizing in the Mobile Sector in CIS

On December 8-9, 2008 a regional conference of UNI affiliates in CIS took place in Kiev, Ukraine. Representatives from communication unions from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine discussed organising and other important union issues.
The affiliates and partner organizations of UNI in EE&CA, with the support from UNI Moscow office made an effort to prepare for organizing campaigns during the year 2008. The priorities were set, the campaign themes and strategies were elaborated and the material prepared.
The companies of TeliaSonera group were acknowledged as the major target. Namely, there are such brands as Megafon (Russia), Moldcell (Moldova), K’cell (Kazakhstan), Geocell (Georgia), Azercell (Azerbaijan), Life (Ukraine). In some of these countries the organizing campaign has been started.
UNI affiliates in the EE&CA region, involved in organizing activities in mobile phone companies, decided:
- to declare the year 2009 a Year of Organizing in the Mobile Sector in the region, and to create a trade union alliance of Telia Sonera in the region;
- to establish a working group/the coordination committee of the alliance;
- to include two representatives from each UNI affiliate (participating in these organizing activities) in the EE&CA region, two representatives of UNI, the representatives of SEKO into the coordination committee;
- to held the first (organizational) meeting of the committee not later than the 15th of March, 2009.
In order to assure the permanent communication of the members of the Coordination Committee, they will be added to the electronic mailing list of the committee. The Coordination Committee should held teleconferences at least once a month.

The main objective of the UNI affiliates in the region for the year 2009 is to come from a preparatory stage to immediate organizing activities trying to recruit new members and to establish new local trade union organizations in the mobile phone companies and call-centers.
