Dear colleagues,

Following the survey UNI Europa carried out last year, aimed at assessing the functioning of the European sector social dialogue in the 13 committees where UNI Europa is a recognised social partner, we now have the pleasure to invite you a UNI Europa workshop on European social dialogue (ESD).

The aim of the workshop is to discuss how to improve the coordination of ESD among UNI Europa sectors and increase the relevance of ESD outcomes for UNI Europa affiliates, complementing sector specific priorities. We will further exchanges views on a possible common UNI Europa strategy to be presented at the UNI Europa conference in Rome.

Participants shall be limited to two per sectorial social dialogue committee

Active interpretation will be available in English and French. Passive languages can be arranged according to confirmed participation.

Setting the scene

Oliver Röthig will first provide an overview of the current discussions at EU level, following the European Commission re-launch of ESD at the high level event organised on 5 March 2015. Laila Castaldo will present the outcomes from the UNI Europa survey and outline the aims of the day, with a view to defining priorities for a future UNI Europa strategy on ESD. Thereafter the discussion will focus on three main areas:

Focus 1: Outcomes

What do we want to achieve with ESD and what are desirable outcomes?
How do we ensure that outcomes are concrete and relevant, and have an impact on the work of UNI Europa affiliates at the national level?
How can we disseminate outcomes to a broader range of members?

Focus 2: Functioning

How do we improve the functioning of ESD in terms of, inter alia, resources, languages, projects, cooperation with employers and the European Commission?
How do we ensure a wider geographical coverage of affiliates in order to increase representation?

Focus 3: Coordination

How can we ensure exchange of best practices and learn from each other in the 13 ESD sector committees where UNI Europa is actively involved?
Should we set up specific cross-sectoral consultation groups on specific European regions or topics?

For further background, please see the document from the Management Committee attached.
