The UNI Commerce Steering Committee, meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, on 13 February 2018, discussed Carrefour’s reorganisation plans.

The plan, designed to boost the company’s economic recovery, will create a real social shock because it will lead to the loss of jobs and the lease management of its stores.

The Committee regrets the lack of prior consultation with the trade unions concerned. Given the fact that Carrefour has a social dialogue in the different countries and at the international level, it calls upon the company to enter into a constructive discussion with a view to safeguarding jobs. The new business model which is being introduced to adapt to the competitive environment cannot be used as an excuse to justify a policy which will cause social decline.

Furthermore, affiliated unions that are as yet unaffected by the plan are particularly concerned that this plan will be rolled out in other European countries and extended to other parts of the world.

The UNI Commerce Steering Committee supports all the initiatives undertaken by its affiliates and calls on workers to mobilise.
