UNI Global Union stands in full solidarity with Turkish workers at Kod-A. UNI affiliate Sosyal-IS launched an organising campaign in the company and managed to reach more than 40 % of the workers. This is enough to be certified as the union and to be able to collectively bargain with the management on the conclusion of a collective agreement. However, the company has objected to the ruling by the Ministry of Labour and refuses to negotiate with the representatives of their workers.
Kod-A management have been guilty of harassing and intimidating workers to leave the union or suffer the consequences, with some workers losing their jobs. Workers have been assigned to different work places as a result of fictitious allegations in a bid to spoil cohesion. Despite meeting with the union, where Sosyal-IS demanded an end to these punitive anti-union measures, the company has continued upon this negative track.
“We stand in full solidarity with the dismissed workers at Kod-A” said UNI Global Union general secretary Philip Jennings. “Intimidating and harassing workers who are fighting for their rights is unacceptable. It’s time for Kod-A to get their act together and start respecting their workers and negotiating a collective bargaining agreement with Sosyal-IS.”
In response, Sosyal-IS and Kod-A workers arranged industrial actions in Istanbul and in Izmir. Actions, demonstrations, and solidarity visits were organized, demonstrating the solidarity and support for Kod-A workers from trade unions and civil society.
Kod-A is a Turkish company which employs around 850 workers specialising in data processing and developing document archives and management technologies.
Kod-A provides information, document and data services to many leading companies and public institutions in Turkey.
