Earlier today, a delegation from UNI travelled to Gorée Island off the most Western point of Africa, and visit the ‘House of Slaves’ with its ‘Door of No Return`, a memorial to the Atlantic slave trade. UNI unveiled a plaque to join those of others who will not let the human toll of African slavery be forgotten. 

UNI Africa, and the entire UNI Global Union family will also not forget the past, and Africa’s unique historical struggle.

The plaque features a quote from Nelson Mandela – “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

Philip Jennings, UNI Global Union General Secretary said, “We are here to remember the victims of this terrible history, but also to strengthen our resolve and our determination to end slavery in its modern form.”

“We have the strength and the power to change the world and together we will put an end to slavery.”

The director of the House of Slaves, Eloi Colly, thanked the UNI delegation for their solidarity and the symbolism of the act. “In an increasingly globalised world, we are all connected. We are fighting the same battles for tolerance, unity and an end to bigotry.”

“The fight is not over and we join with our friends in the labour movement the war against slavery.”
