UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings took part on a debate on the fall out of Donald Trump's election victory on Swiss television RTS's flagship programme 'Toutes Taxes Comprise'.

Jennings said that Trump's pledge for 4% growth  in the U.S. was unrealistic without decent working conditions, fair salaries and unions free to negotiate.

"What we fear with Trump is a new chapter of trickle down economics which clearly doesn't work. Without improving working conditions and salaries the U.S cannot achieve 4% growth."

The UNI GS warned that there was no sense of a social diaogue in the U.S. where unions are not given a voice.

"Trump is appointing extreme right politicians to key positions, notably the Wisconsin Boys, Reince Priebus and Paul Ryan as well as Steve Bannon who have a track record of trying to silence unions."

Jennings said that Trump's victory called for a moment of reflection on where the world was going and what type of globalisation we wanted.

"The neo-liberal model has failed people for the benefit of the 1% in terms of  mass unemployment, precarious work and skewered distribution of wealth in favour of the rich. The politics of Trump fundamentally do not address this burning issue.

"We need a new type of globalisation for security, to fight climate change and human rigths."
