Under the banner “Respect for the Profession” worker leaders in Denmark’s commerce sector gathered in Aalborg, Denmark to discuss and debate the accomplishments their union has achieved over the last four years and to set a strategic path forward for the next four.

In 2012 HK Handel took the bold decision to transform their union into an Organizing Union. Since that time the union has halted membership decline while increasing the number of activists, stewards, and health & safety representatives. The 2016 Congress unanimously approved to continue this path and approach.

HK Handel congress noted that the future of retail work will present a challenge to for unions as well as retail enterprises. The union’s adopted action plan calls on the leadership and activists to stay vigilant and be prepared to adapt to meet future challenges.

The 2016-2020 action plan commits HK Handel to:

• Increase resources for organizing at the local and national levels
• Increase resources for the training and education of shop stewards and activists
• Prioritize the fight for workers’ rights nationally and internationally through regional bodies and UNI Global Union
• Work for better conditions for its members through bargaining strong local and national agreements
