U.S. union visits Philippines to protest handling of struck work
A delegation from Communications Workers of America and UNI Global Union has traveled to Philippines to protest at Verizon work being shifted to the country during a major strike at the U.S. telecoms company.
The delegation, which included two striking U.S. Verizon workers, delivered a letter to the company offices in Manila and demonstrated outside call centers handling the struck work. The rallies were joined by dozens of members of local Philippines unions.
The visit comes during one of the largest strikes in recent U.S. history. Almost 40,000 CWA and IBEW members have staged hundreds of protests across the country. 300,000 petitions were presented to the company at a recent shareholders meeting.
The CWA says Verizon continues to offshore jobs to low-wage countries, putting short term profits and executive compensation ahead of decent jobs for workers and communities.
