Mirah Sumirat, from Aspek Indonesia becomes new President of UNI Apro Women's Committee, taking over from Maxine Gay.

In her acceptance speech Sister Mirah thanked her predecessor Maxine Gay and other members of the UNI family, including Denise McGuire,  and Veronica Fernandez Mendez.  

Sister Mirah made special mention of UNI Global Union President Ann Selin who back in Finland fighting against anti-union legislation. She said that the whole UNI family backed her in her struggle.

Sister Mirah thanked the affiliates for their trust in electing her and then spelt out the challenges ahead.

She said, "There are many challenges and problems confronting women in the region - in some cases lack of basic rights, unfair treatment in the workplace. We have  a responsbility to help them. Solidarity and advocacy, protest and justice. We should not forget that there are still many cases of sexual harrasment and abuse.

" UNI we can succceed  butr do not underestimate that it is a difficult job full of obstacles. But we know that one day women will have their rights without discrimination! It is our duty to achieve this - we must talk to  goverments and employers to get the job done. We meet our goals through social dialogue and social partnership.

"Keep fighting, all women will be the women who benefit all of humankind. Tomorrow the sun will rise again - we remain optimsistic." Sister Mirah concluded.
