UNI Global Union has joined millions in condemning the terrorist atrocities which took the lives of at least 102 people and wounded many more in Turkey. Two bombs exploded during a peace rally organised by Turkish trade unions, student activists and other civil society groups in Ankara.

The attack is the deadliest in the country’s recent history and the government has declared three days of national mourning. Trade unionists are believed to be among those killed.

Addressing the Unionen Congress in Gothenburg, General Secretary of UNI, Philip Jennings said, “On Friday we celebrated the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the Tunisian Quartet which included the Tunisian trade union movement in recognition of the sacrifice and struggle of Tunisian unions for a new democratic future.”

“On Saturday, the Ankara atrocity reminded us of the brutality that unions and civil society face in the promotion and defense of peace and democracy. This adversity only makes our movement more determined in the struggle for peace.”

“We condemn this attack and express condolences to those that lost loved ones. We extend our sympathy and solidarity with our affiliates and the Turkish people.”

“We bow our heads in sadness, but we stand firm in our belief that human rights are a pillar of democracy.”

Turkish authorities have been heavily criticized for their handling of the security situation in Ankara, with security forces allegedly blocking medical services to victims and the use of teargas at a peaceful demonstration.

ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow called for a “full, transparent and independent investigation into all the circumstances of the attack and its aftermath.”
