UNI Americas expresses its firm solidarity with the people and government of Greece, suffocated by the economic policies of the Troika of the European Union, the European Central Bank and the IMF, whose austerity measures have caused deep poverty.

The European Union's savage capitalism led by the Troika is incompatible with democracy, respect for Human Rights and the most basic rights of workers.

In the Americas we have suffered the IMF's structural adjustment policies. We refer to this period as the "lost decade": structural adjustments did not create economic growth but caused massive loss of jobs, damage to  infrastructures, financial volatility and the weakening of the democracies that we built with so much effort.

The promises were never fulfilled. Today we are shocked to see the same unsuccessful economic policies being imposed on the Greek people.

UNI Americas condemns the European Union and financial groups' policy to destabilize the Greek democracy, and calls on workers throughout the world and democratic forces to pursue the right to sovereign self-determination of the Greek people, to be expressed in the referendum on Sunday.
