After 13 days of strike action in Chile, Prosegur is still refusing to meet and negotiate with cash and transit workers who have been offered a 0% pay increase.
Unions are visiting Spanish Embassies throughout the Americas and parts of Europe this week to protest against human rights abuses and anti-union behaviour by Prosegur in Latin America.
Prosegur has underlined the point made by unions by refusing to negotiate with its main cash and transit union despite a strike which has now completed 13 days. On Monday Prosegur refused to attend mediation talks at the Ministry of Labour in Santiago.
Actions have taken place by unions and union federations in Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Belgium. Further actions are planned for this week in other countries.
The actions are aimed at the Spanish government who has received an OECD complaint about human rights abuses in November 2013, but has not officially accepted the claim nearly two years later. Days after receiving the complaint, the Secretary of State responsible for the National Contact point for the OECD gave Prosegur a prize.
A few days after receiving the complaint about Prosegur’s abuses, the Secretary of State for Commerce in Spain, Mr. Jaime García-Legaz awarded Prosegur with the Plaque for Merit in Commerce. The following quote is what the Secretary of State said regarding the four companies that received the awards:
“We recognise these four companies, and people that represent them, symbolize the Spain in which we believe and for which we are working.
They represent what we want for Spanish companies, emblematic companies that by focusing on quality, design and internationalization have become successful global companies, of which we all feel very proud”.
UNI demands the Spanish government take the serious concerns around Prosegur’s behaviour in Latin America seriously.
