On Monday 4th May, Mr. Kibiswa Naupess, Professor at the Higher Institute of Medical Techniques (ISTM) and former Secretary General of the National Union of Officers of Health (SYNCAS) went on hunger strike, following the non-payment of his wages by his employer, the Democratic Republic of  Congo.

Fearing for the lives and safety of Professor Kibiswa and his family, Philip Jennings, General Secretary of UNI Global Union, wrote to the Prime Minister of the DRC urging him to personally involve himself as the Head of Government, in order to rapidly resolve the situation and to “immediately and unconditionally afford Professor Kibiswa all of the fundamental human rights under the basic law of your country."

UNI Global Union and Philip Jennings expressed their shock and indignation that Professor Kibiswa had not been paid for his work, and implored the DRC government to immediately remunerate him for the non-payment of his salary.

This is an unacceptable and illegal confiscation of labor compensation and a grave violation of the Constitution of the DRC, which stipulates in Article 16 that "Work is a right and a sacred duty for every Congolese. The State guarantees the right to work, protection against unemployment and just and favorable remuneration ensuring the worker and his family an existence worthy of human dignity ".

UNI Global Union strongly condemns this new form of slavery and takes this opportunity to call on all Congolese workers to mobilize for total solidarity in favor of Professor Kibiswa.
