UNI Europa is organising a high level panel debate on the future of the European services industry.

The European elections of May 2014 have illustrated how fragile the European Project has become after five years of crisis. In times of a digital revolution, mass unemployment, rising inequality, and continuing economic stagnation, Europeans are losing faith in the European Union’s ability to foster economic and social progress.

Services not only bring the majority of Europeans into work, they too are the backbone of a competitive economy and a modern society. Much to the detriment of workers, consumers, and businesses, EU policy targeting the services sector fails to ensure high standards in terms of services quality and employment. A change of course is needed. Only with a thriving services industry – a sector that contributes in excess of 70% to both EU output and employment – will the European Union be able to realise its full potential to improve citizens’ daily life and welfare by combining a competitive economy with an inclusive European social model.
