UNI MEI Global Union supports the Korean Film Workers Union, FKMWU’s efforts with respect to the revision of the Act on Film and Video Industry Promotion.

A bill to revise “The Act on Film and Video Industry Promotion” is currently debated at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea. The Bill covers the composition of the Film Sector Tripartite Committee with provisions on working conditions, guidelines of standard wage system and standard employment contract forms, health & safety measures in production, penalties for failure of compliance with the standard wage system and standard employment contract as well as other provisions.

It is a very inspiring move for the Korean film industry.   The working conditions in the filmmaking industry are very tough and wages are sometimes below the minimum wage.  The vast majority of film professionals are confronted with conditions below the standards set by  provisions of the Tripartite Compliance Agreement, which has been renewed for a third time in 2014 between employers and FKMWU.

UNI MEI Global Union supports the legislative initiative, which aims at improving the working conditions and wages of film workers and to esnure that minum terms formally agreed upon are respected. We call on all lawmakers to approve the Bill and bring dignity to the work place in film production.
