UNI MEI Global Union joins the broadcasting community today in celebrating the #WorldRadioDay.

Radio is a popular medium, indispensable for a modern information society. Radio remains relevant in today's world. As the original mobile and social medium, it provides programming content meeting the entertainment, information and cultural needs of citizens.

Radio is @heart of live every single day and a valuable source for interactions among all communities of a society and between societies. Radio brings people together. It is an inclusive medium capable of including minority interests, cultures, and languages.

Radio of the early days is not the radio of today. Plug-in devices, HD and internet radio, Wi-Fi and streamlined programming etc. redefine what radio means and how it is used, it is a dynamic medium. It will keep changing but its values of independence, pluralism, diversity, inclusion and sustainability need to be cherished by all who make, govern, listen radio.

We greet today all radio workers, be their announcers, technicians, administrative staff or management who make radio happen every single minute throughout the year. We also greet all the radio listeners, say keep tuning in, and participate in the interaction with others over the radio.

Access to radio is a human right, it is vital for citizen to have access to radio in particular in times of natural catastrophes and any other form of danger.

According to the ITU, more than 1 billion people have no access to radio today. This needs to change and we call on governments and stakeholders to step-up efforts: make it a priority to bring radio to more people!
