UNI in solidarity with Charlie Hebdo

UNI Global Union stands in solidarity with Charlie Hebdo and its staff, victims of a inhumane and barbaric attack.
UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings said, “The whole UNI family wishes to express its deep condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the victims of this despicable attack. This is an assault on freedom of expression and democracy, values the labour movement shares with Charlie Hebdo and all journalists and people who have the courage to stand up to extremism and terrorism. The outpouring of support across France and the world under the banner “Je suis Charlie” shows that decent people, whatever their beliefs, from Muslims to Christians, Jews to Hindus, will not bend the knee to extremists. France is the land of “liberty” and this ideal burns only brighter when terror tries to snuff it out.”
12 Charlie Hebdo staff including the editor, leading caricaturists were killed and many more seriously injured in the attack at the magazine’s central Paris headquarters yesterday.
The media and entertainment unions represented by UNI MEI Global Union express their support and solidarity with families and colleagues of the victims of the attacks at Charlie Hebdo. We mourn the death of the journalists and the two police men killed today.
"This attack has killed people, our colleagues who defended democracy, freedom of expression and our liberty every day. We call all colleagues and citizens to join manifestations today and in the coming days in response to this brutal killing with a message of hope and determination: democracy, tolerance and freedom of expression will prevail!" said William Maunier President, of EURO-MEI - the European media entertainment sector of UNI Europa.
UNI staff all over the world have been taking part in solidarity meetings and tweeting their support via #JeSuisCharlie
They have also observed two minutes silence to remember the victims.
