Cross sectoral organising strategies effective in Nepal

UNI affiliates grouped under National Liaison Council [UNI NLC] Nepal has flourished over the years because UNI NLC's conscious efforts to adapt and confront the challenges, changing trade union structures and developing innovative action plans to respond effectively to new situations, “Cross Sectoral Organizing Strategies” have worked; said Christopher Ng UNI Apro Regional Secretary in his opening remarks at the 4th National Conference of the UNI NLC held in Kathmandu.
He further said; we are now living in an era of job insecurity, of a terrible imbalance in economic development. The unfettered market economy has made the poor poorer and the rich richer. Free Trade and Free Capital without a framework of regulation as national level and international levels are unstable and unsustainable. It has not improved the people’s living standards but increased inequalities between people, within and between countries. Reducing inequality is a challenge for all stakeholders including trade unions as a priority.
Guest of honour to the conference Dr. Ramsharan Mahat, Finance Minister of Nepal said that “Union must be innovative and collaborative in development initiatives and adopting new ideas for betterment of all”. He further added that now it’s time to move positively to improve quality and productivity in the era of globalization for the benefits of nation.
Milind Nadkarni President UNI Indian Liaison Council, AKM Kamal from UNI Bangladesh Liaison Council, Dr. Devraj Dahal from FES Nepal also expressed their solidarity and fraternal greetings for the conference. Union leaders of major national centers namely GEFONT, NTUC and ANTUF shared their views during the plenary session of the conference. The theme of the conference was Organizing Cross Sectoral: Building Union Power”, UNI/NLC conference adopted 13 motions on statement and action plan as guiding principle for the next four years. Conference elected Shankar Lamichhane as the new President Ganesh Bahadur KC as the new General Secretary Deepa Bharadwaj was elected as new Treasurer.
The conference acknowledged the various organizing initiatives of five affiliates and presented awards in recognition of their achievements.
